String and Harp Auditions

String and Harp auditions for the 2011-2012 Senior Regional Orchestra will be held at Brentsville District High School on September 24, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Students may be asked to perform all major and (melodic) minor scales up to 3 sharps and 3 flats in three octaves (two octaves for bass).  Scales should be played in groups of two slurred and two martele ascending and groups of four slurred descending.  Scales should be performed at a tempo of quarter note equal to 120 beats per minute.  The required scales are:

C Major               a Minor       

G Major              e Minor

D Major              b Minor

A Major              f# Minor   

F Major               d Minor       

B-flat Major        g Minor

E-flat Major        c Minor               

This year’s orchestral audition excerpt comes from Brahm’s “Symphony No. 1, Mvmt. 4”  Students should prepare from m.61 (Allegro non troppo, ma con brio) to m. 244 (Letter “L”).  You may download the excerpts by clicking on the following links: Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass

There will also be a sight reading component to the audition.

Harp auditions will be graded as follows:

    Technique – 40%

    Lariviere’ - #36 - beginning to fine (top of 2nd page)

    Prepared Piece – 40%

    Chanson De Mai – Hasselmans  (Any Transcription)

    Sight Reading – 20%

Wind and Percussion Auditions

Wind and percussion auditions for the 2011-2012 Regional Orchestra will be held at Brentsville District High School on September 21, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

The audition etude will be the same etude used for 2011 Virginia All State Auditions during the 2010-2011 school year.  Scale auditions will follow the same guidelines as District Band.  For more information, please see the VBODA website.  NOTE: Look under “Archives.”

There will also be a sight reading component to the audition.

Instrumentation needed for the Brahms “Symphony No. 1, Mvmt. 4” is as follows;

 

2 Flutes

2 Oboes 

2 Clarinets

2 Bassoons

1 Contrabassoon

4 Horns

2 Trumpets

2 Trombones

1 Bass Trombone

Strings

In addition to the Brahms, the SRO will perform the  Introduction and Wedding March by Rimsky-Korsakov and the Festive Overture by Shostakovich. Below is the required instrumentation for the wind, brass and percussion section for each piece.

Rimsky-Korsakov: 3-3-3-3 (includes piccolo, English horn, Bass clarinet, contrabassoon), 4-3-3-1, timp+4, 2harps, cel, strings

Shostakovich: 3-3-3-3 (includes contra), 4-3-3-1, timp+4

THE SRO WILL REQUIRE A TUBA PLAYER.
